Undergraduate Degrees in Chemistry

There are multiple ways to earn an undergraduate degree in chemistry at Texas A&M University. First you will choose which degree program will work best for you — the Bachelor of Science or the Bachelor of Arts. Next, you will choose which track will work best for your interests.

Bachelor of Science in Chemistry

The Bachelor of Science program will give you a comprehensive, solid foundation in all the major branches of chemistry. You will also enjoy individualization through involvement in exciting, innovative, state-of-the-art research programs.

Most students in the program become involved in research during their junior year and continue this until graduation. Students often receive research scholarships and fellowships, which include opportunities for summer research programs. Undergraduate chemistry majors have even had the opportunity to be a coauthor of scientific publications in major research journals before graduation.

Undergraduate chemistry research activities involve substantial use of modern scientific equipment, including major instrumentation. Students involved in undergraduate research also gain considerable insight into the profession through substantial individual contact with chemistry department faculty.

B.S. in Chemistry — General Track B.S. in Chemistry — General Track

The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry is the appropriate program if you plan to pursue an advanced degree in chemistry, biochemistry, forensics, chemical physics or other fields. It is also ideal if you are seeking a career in the chemical industry.

You may wish to choose electives suggested in the biological or environmental chemistry tracks.

This degree program fully satisfies the accreditation requirements of the American Chemical Society.

The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry — biological-chemistry track is ideal if you want to pursue graduate study in biological chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology or related fields or a career in the pharmaceutical industry. Courses in biology, biochemistry, genetics and statistics are recommended as electives.

If you want to enter an M.D./Ph.D. program or medical, dental or pharmacy school, you may need to take additional advanced biology courses. Check the admission requirements for these programs with the Office of Professional School Advising.

The Bachelor of Science — environmental chemistry track recommends electives that will prepare you to address environmental problems from a variety of perspectives. You can choose electives from recommended courses in:

B.S. in Chemistry — Materials Chemistry Track B.S. in Chemistry — Materials Chemistry Track

In materials chemistry, molecular-level understanding drives the design, synthesis, and characterization of materials with interesting and useful properties. Insight into catalytic, electronic, optical, or structural characteristics of substances allows them to be tailored for different applications.

This track includes a breadth of coverage in both hard and soft materials. It will prepare you for further study in materials chemistry or employment in a variety of industries.

Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry

The Bachelor of Arts program will give you a firm and broadly-based foundation in chemistry. This program is the most flexible option for a chemistry degree because it includes a generous number of electives and requires a minor from another discipline.

You will gain a secondary area of specialization through the minor requirement. This allows you to combine chemistry with an interest in subject areas such as biochemistry, biology, business, computer science, education, forensics, medicine or physics.

University-Approved Minors

Although not required for the program, abundant research opportunities are available to students. The program also permits and encourages non-technical elective courses.

B.A. in Chemistry — General Track B.A. in Chemistry — General Track

This program meets the needs of many students who plan to use chemistry as a springboard to careers in a variety of fields, including:

Chemical sales
Marketing
Law
Technical writing
Teaching at a pre-college level
Science journalism

A Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry coupled with a minor in biology is excellent preparation for careers in the health-related disciplines, especially medical and dental schools. The flexibility of the degree program can prepare you for a broad spectrum of medical or dental careers.

The Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry — biological chemistry or medical, dental, pharmacy school track provides an effective way to use available free electives to satisfy the pre-professional requirements for these programs. Courses in anatomy, biochemistry, biology, genetics and microbiology are included. Your academic advisor can help you choose additional free electives that will strengthen your program of study.

B.A. in Chemistry — Chemical Education Track B.A. in Chemistry — Chemical Education Track

The chemical education track allows you to obtain secondary teacher certification while earning a chemistry degree. This track is ideal if you plan to become a high school chemistry teacher or to pursue a master's degree in chemical education.

You must complete the requirements for secondary teacher certification as defined by the School of Education and Human Development. Consultation with the School of Education and Human Development is required.
