During their years together, the couple travelled extensively and enjoyed their Brazos Valley ranch, where they raised emus and cattle and even hosted the legendary English theoretical physicist and cosmologist Dr. Stephen Hawking.

Dr. Hans Schuessler’s innovative spirit, willingness to challenge conventional wisdom and commitment to collegiality were prized by the international physics community. A groundbreaking researcher and trusted colleague to numerous Nobel Prize recipients, the Texas A&M University professor also was a Renaissance man who collected art, flew airplanes, sailed, fished, ranched and raised emus and cattle. 

During his nearly six decades in Aggieland, the noted physicist devoted himself to leading-edge research, working with internationally renowned scientists. “His career was defined by groundbreaking research in atomic physics and laser spectroscopy,” said his wife, Dr. Zohreh Schuessler, a senior lecturer at Baylor University’s Louise Herrington School of Nursing. “He pioneered techniques in the on-line spectroscopy of short-lived isotopes, precise measurements of nuclear moments, and advanced methods involving highly charged ion spectroscopy and Wigner crystals.”

Yet, one of Hans Schuessler’s greatest joys was working with students to help them explore their own passion for physics. To honor that part of her husband’s legacy, Zohreh Schuessler established the Drs. Zohreh and Hans Schuessler Endowed Graduate Fellowship in Physics after his death in 2025. “To his students and collaborators, Hans was far more than a professor; he was a source of wisdom and a guiding light,” she said. “His enthusiasm for physics was contagious, and his belief in the potential of his students was unwavering. He was a lifelong influence on all who had the privilege of knowing him.”

The fellowship will eventually support one or more full-time graduate students, preferably those studying experimental physics. “The Hans Schuessler Graduate Student Fellowship is a deeply meaningful tribute to an extraordinary scientist, colleague, and mentor whose impact on the Department of Physics and Astronomy was profound and lasting,” said Dr. Grigory Rogachev, department head. “Hans was a remarkably prolific researcher whose achievements spanned atomic, molecular, and biophysics, crossing boundaries between fundamental science and important applications—from exquisite measurements of nuclear ground-state properties to advances in medical diagnostics, nuclear security, and fossil fuel exploration. He also was an exceptional mentor to so many graduate students, making a lasting contribution, helping launch many illustrious careers. This generous endowment will honor his legacy by supporting some of the very best graduate students in our department, helping them pursue ambitious research and develop into the next generation of scientific leaders.”

In the Right Place 

Dr. Hans Schuessler’s family roots in Germany extend back to 1666. Each Schuessler family has this crest in their home. A larger version hangs from the window of the Schuesslers’ hometown church in Laudenbach. Born and raised in Mannheim, Germany, Hans Schuessler was a boy during World War II. “His father and brother had been drafted to the front, and at the time, there was no food, so Germans were suffering,” said his wife. “Hans wanted to be the man of the house and help his family so he would go out and look for supplies. Once as he was riding his bicycle home, American soldiers shot at him. He immediately knew that he should lay down on the ground, which saved his life.”

A talented athlete, he was named to the German youth soccer team after the war. He also developed an affinity for nature while touring Europe by motorcycle. But his true passion was science, which began in boyhood as he mixed chemicals on the family’s balcony.

Planning to study mathematics, he enrolled at Heidelberg University. At one point, the curious undergraduate student approached Dr. Hans Kopfermann, a famous and highly influential German nuclear physicist who was one of the fathers of physics. “Hans asked to see a single atom, which at that time, was a far-fetched dream, but Dr. Kopfermann didn’t discourage him,” Zohreh Schuessler said. “Instead, he said, ‘OK, try it.’”

Hans Schuessler collected the necessary equipment, did the calculations and ran the experiment, which failed. But he succeeded in finding his career path. “He was in the right place for science. Europe is much older than America, and science was already established there,” Zohreh Schuessler said. “He had the opportunity to collaborate with famous people in the field.”

That initial experiment also set the stage for one of his future scientific successes. “Later in his career, he could trap a single ion and was indeed an expert in this field,” she said. “To him, this was a dream come true.”

Expanding Horizons 

Dr. Hans Schuessler’s research gained the attention of the international physics community. He worked with colleagues in labs located around the world and was a regular presence at the Max Planck Institutes, which are independent and autonomous research institutes that conduct basic research in the life sciences, natural sciences and the social and human sciences. His research, which resulted in more than 400 publications and about 5,500 citations, led to opportunities to work with top physicists around the globe. He also was a regular presence at the U.S. national labs and the Max Planck Institutes, which are independent and autonomous research institutes run by the Max Planck Society that conduct basic research in the life sciences, natural sciences and the social and human sciences. 

Hans Schuessler’s work also caught the attention of the Nobel Prize selection committee, as did one of his students, Dr. Theodor W. Hänsch, who received the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physics. While Hans Schuessler was never selected for the prestigious honor, the selection committee often asked him to submit candidates for consideration.

Along with these accolades, he loved working with students, including encouraging non-physics majors to explore physics concepts and ultimately building a robust pipeline of talent. “He was good with aspiring and undergraduate students,” Zohreh Schuessler said. “At the end of the semester, he would announce: ‘I have job openings in my lab. If any of you are interested, come visit my lab.’ A lot of the undergraduate students would walk into his lab and learn. Some of them remained and continued as physics students.”

Away From the Lab 

Yet physics was just part of Hans Schuessler’s repertoire. He developed a passion for sailing and fishing while at the University of Washington and indulged his interest in nature by buying a ranch near Texas A&M.

He also enjoyed two happy marriages. “Hans liked to say, ‘I am a ‘Hans im Glück’ (Hans in Luck) — fortunate, as they say; better two such women than one Nobel Prize,’” Zohreh Schuessler said.

Hans Schuessler met his first wife, Renate Schuessler–Laux, in Heidelberg. Fluent in German and French, she began teaching in Texas A&M’s Department of Modern Languages while earning a doctorate in industrial engineering. She eventually joined Texas A&M’s faculty. After her death in 1991, Hans Schuessler established the Renate Schuessler–Laux Memorial Fund in Physics in her memory, which was supported by his and other donors’ contributions.

In 1994, Hans Schuessler first struck up a conversation with his future wife, then a nursing student, while walking across campus. During their 30-plus-year relationship, Zohreh Schuessler, who earned a doctorate in nursing science from Texas Woman’s University, accompanied her husband on many of his travels. She especially enjoyed their trips to the Max Planck Institutes. “He loved going to the institutes because he could collaborate with the scientists on quantum optics,” she said. “I loved it as well. They always gave me a separate desk and computer in Hans’ office so I could also work there. They treated us like a family.”

She also treasured the ranch. “Over time, Hans and Renate bought small pieces of land,” Zohreh Schuessler said. “When he was not in his lab preparing or adjusting his lasers, he was in the field, repairing fences and treating cows for insects.”

He eventually started raising emus, which proved to be an attraction when internationally renowned physicist Dr. Stephen Hawking visited Texas A&M. “He wanted to see a farm, so the physics department asked me to put together a party,” Zohreh Schuessler said. “The whole physics department and Dr. Hawking along with his nurses came to the ranch. Dr. Hawking went to the emu pen, where we took a picture of him that was published on his website.”

Although Hans Schuessler didn’t have any children, he had a soft spot for students and used the approach he personally experienced as an undergraduate at the University of Heidelberg. “Hans wanted to nurture and give students freedom, so he didn’t micromanage them in the lab,” Zohreh Schuessler said. “He encouraged them to create their own ideas. His footprint is vast as the students he educated now work around the world. And while they are Hans’ students, I think of them as my kids, too.”
