Three faculty smile in unison from left to right: Jennifer Marshall, Ralf Rapp, and Alexei Sokolov.

It is not often that multiple major recognitions arrive at once, but this year brought exactly that for the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Texas A&M. Three faculty members have been honored with prestigious awards that span teaching excellence, research impact, and international scientific distinction, highlighting the depth and diversity of work happening across the department.

Jennifer Marshall – Faculty Excellence Award

Professor Jennifer Marshall, holder of the Arseven Mitchell Chair in Astronomical Statistics, received the College of Arts and Sciences Award for Faculty Excellence. Her work focuses on near field cosmology, using stars and nearby galaxies to understand how the universe formed, while also playing a key role in major international collaborations. Her award reflects excellence across research, teaching, and service.

Ralf Rapp – Research Impact Award

Professor Ralf Rapp received the College of Arts and Sciences Award for Research Impact for his influential work in nuclear physics. His research explores matter under extreme conditions, including the quark gluon plasma created in high energy collisions, helping connect theory with experiments around the world. His work continues to shape our understanding of fundamental physics.

Alexei Sokolov – AAAS Fellow

Professor Alexei Sokolov was named a 2025 Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), one of the highest honors in the scientific community. His research in laser physics and ultrafast science has led to advances in molecular control and real time detection technologies, earning international recognition from his peers.

Together, these honors reflect the strength and breadth of research and teaching within the department. It is a moment that highlights not only individual achievement, but the continued momentum of Physics and Astronomy at Texas A&M.
