Frontiers in Mathematics is a lecture series in the Texas A&M University Department of Mathematics. Each year, distinguished mathematicians are invited to visit the campus for a week, and to deliver series of lectures on current research. This also provides opportunities for interactions with our faculty and graduate students. We invite you to view our current list of speakers, and to browse through our archives below.
Speaker for the academic year 2025-2026
Speaker: Emmanuel Trélat, Sorbonne Université and CNRS
Title: Everything is under control: mathematics optimizes everyday life
Abstract: From the art of parallel parking to the challenge of sending rockets to space, control theory teaches us how to steer systems with precision. It provides mathematical tools to guide cars, robots, spacecraft, or chemical reactions toward their goals. Through vivid, often amusing examples, I will show how the science behind everyday actions can also shape interplanetary missions.
About the speaker: Emmanuel Trélat is a professor at Sorbonne Université and a senior researcher with CNRS. His work spans optimal control, geometric control theory, and applications to PDEs and mechanics. He is the recipient of several distinctions : SIAM Outstanding Paper Prize (2006); Prix Maurice-Audin (2010); Institut universitaire de France, elected member (2011); Felix Klein Prize (2012); Prix Blaise-Pascal (2014); Prix Madame Victor Noury (2016); Invited Speaker, International Congress of Mathematicians, Rio de Janeiro (2018); Academia Europaea, elected member (2024).
