Emma Newman

Emma Newman (she/her) is a doctorate student in the Department of Anthropology at Texas A&M University. Emma’s research focuses on borderlands (theory, enforcement, and policy) and migration along the U.S./México border. Her current work is based in South Texas and incorporates historical, qualitative ethnographic, and archaeological approaches in contemporary border and migration studies.

Emma is the proud creator and curator of Beyond Borders/ Más allá de fronteras - a bilingual, multimedia, museum exhibition. Beyond Borders/ Más allá de fronteras is based on her master’s research and photoethnographic work and was displayed in the Stark Galleries of the Texas A&M Memorial Student Center (2024). Emma’s work has been funded through grants from the Texas A&M Anthropology Department and the Melbern G. Glasscock Center for Humanities Studies. Emma was additionally awarded a research fellowship through the Texas A&M Race and Ethnic Studies Institute (RESI) in partnership with the Cantu Foundation (2023-2024) and was selected as a Crossing Latinidades Fellow in partnership with the Mellon Foundation and the University of Illinois, Chicago (2024-2025).
