MPE for Students Recently Admitted to Economics

The Math Placement Exam [MPE] is a 90-minute online exam used to assess students' math skill. This is an important tool to help advisors determine the math course in which students should enroll. However, the MPE is NOT a credit granting exam and does not exempt you from completing your designated mathematics sequence [BA or BS], even if you receive a "perfect score."

The MPE will become available one month before your New Student Conference [NSC]. You will receive an email alert with a link once it is available. You must take the MPE before arriving at your NSC

Practice problems for all Math Placement Exams can be found on Math Learning Center (MLC) Website.

Requirements for Economics

All incoming students have access to the MPE on Canvas, but not all students are required to take the exam. Your degree plan's required mathematics sequence determines your need to take the MPE.

First Year BS Economics Majors

All first year BS Economics majors are required to take the MPE.

MPE Score Information

The Department of Economics asked the Department of Mathematics for MPE score recommendations based on their historical knowledge of the MPE and MATH 151. Please use the information below as you take your exam.

Additionally, students who score a minimum of 550 on the Math area of the SAT are typically those who score at lest a 22 on the MPE.

  • Scores of 22+: you may enroll in the first mathematics course for the BS ECON degree plan, MATH 151
  • Scores of 17 - 21: it is recommended that you brush up on your math skills and retake the MPE
    • The Department of Mathematics offers the Precalculus Preparation Program (PPP), a three-week, fully online program designed to improve the success rates of prospective students who will be taking a calculus course at Texas A&M. The short summer sessions are designed to reinforce, or reteach, the prerequisite concepts and skills that are needed for students to be successful in calculus.
    • Retaking the MPE does not guarantee admittance into MATH 151, but a chance to improve your score.
  • Scores Below 15: it is recommended you consider changing your degree plan to BA Economics which does not require the MATH 151 and MATH 152 sequence
