One of our professors, Dr. Andres Viana, has recently received a grant funded by TAMU's Race and Ethnic Studies Institute, Faculty Small Grants Program, for his recent work on his project "Racial Trauma and Hazardous Drinking Among Latinos: A Pilot Study".
Dr Viana stated that "racism and discrimination are daily realities for many Latinos in the U.S., affecting not just how people are treated—but also how they feel, cope, and stay healthy. Over time, this constant stress can lead to emotional exhaustion and risky behaviors, including heavy drinking."
"Our study looks at how being constantly on guard for discrimination—something called race-related vigilance—may help explain why racial stress increases the risk of alcohol misuse. By recruiting 150 Latino adults across the country, we aim to understand these links and use the findings to inform culturally grounded solutions that promote health in Latino communities."
Keep up the great work, Dr. Viana! Gig em!
