Eduardo Espina

Eduardo Espina has published fourteen books of poetry, essays, and literary criticism, with four more currently in preparation. After earning his Ph.D. in Latin American Literature at Washington University-in-St. Louis and teaching at Amherst College and Middlebury College, Espina came to Texas A&M University in 1987. He is currently a professor in the Department of Global Languages & Cultures. During his time at A&M, Professor Espina has been awarded the university’s two major awards: the Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award in Teaching (2007) and Research (2016).

His field of expertise is innovative American literatures (poetry and essays) of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. Doctoral dissertations have been written on Espina’s work and extensive scholarly articles have been published in prestigious academic journals. He is included in The Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics (fourth edition). Beyond this, Espina’s poetry is studied in universities in Latin America, Europe, China, and the United States, and his poems have been partially translated into English, French, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Albanian, Croatian, Italian, Russian, and Mandarin Chinese.

His poetry appears in more than 40 international anthologies. He is one of the only 53 poets in the Spanish language included in the rigorous anthology Spanische und hispanoamerikanische Lyrik, published by the prestigious German publishing house Beck. This anthology of monumental rigor, four volumes and 2,500 pages long, took 12 years of work and goes from the 13th century to the present. Of his most recent book published in English, The Milli Vanilli Condition: Essays on Culture in the New Millennium, critic and former MLA president Marjorie Perloff wrote: “A stunning collection of essays on the absurdities of contemporary life.” Charles Bernstein wrote: “Espina’s Essays are Montaigne in Las Vegas”. In 2010 Espina was awarded the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship. In 2022 he was awarded the Fulbright Fellowship in its main category, Senior Scholar, to research and teach in Paraguay.
