Biography
Alice van't Hoff will join Texas A&M University as an Assistant Professor of Philosophy in 2025. She completed her PhD at Princeton University in 2024, followed by a postdoctoral position with the Phlox Research Group at the University of Vienna. While she has many philosophical interests, particularly in metaphysics, her academic research focuses on two main themes. The first concerns the nature and significance of quantification, including questions about its scope and generality, the relationship between higher-order and first-order quantification, the possibility of ontologically innocent quantification, and the semantics of quantification in various formal languages. Her second major research interest is in the philosophy of gender, where she aims to investigate the social-metaphysical commitments associated with different theories of gender. This project addresses topics such as the nature of gender and gender identity, the metaphysics of social kinds, and the ethical and political duties and entitlements that arise in virtue of a person's gender.
