What is the PsycMentor Program?

The PsycMentor Program is the peer mentor component of PBSI 105. Mentors, who are junior and senior students in PBSI, hold biweekly mentor meetings for a group of first-year and transfer students. Mentors help first-year and transfer students in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences adjust to college life and succeed as a Texas A&M psychology student. Students can be part of this program for honors or internship credit. Students in this program have the opportunity to facilitate course lessons, provide socioemotional support and guidance to first-year and transfer students, and develop as a leader.

Who is eligible?

All psychology majors and behavioral and cognitive neuroscience majors who will be juniors or seniors in the semester for which they are applying are eligible. Students will be evaluated on their interest in the program, their university and psychology GPA, and their interview performance.

What is involved in the program?

Students will register for PBSI 484 for 1, 2, or 3 credits (0 credits and honors options are also available). Mentors will have meetings with their group every other week. Mentors will also meet biweekly with other mentors and the PsycMentor coordinator to prepare materials for their upcoming mentor meetings. Mentors will be asked to complete biweekly reports on their mentor meetings, as well as complete two program evaluations. Mentors can expect to spend approximately 3-5 hours every other week on tasks related to this program.

How do I apply?

Applications will open in October for students who want to be PsycMentors in Spring, 2025.  If you have any questions, please reach out to Emily Raibley, the PsycMentor Coordinator, at emilykjohnson88@exchange.tamu.edu.
