Research Interests
My current activities include teaching CHEM 119 and coordinating the CHEM 117/119/120 laboratories. Because these courses are required for many college majors, I get to teach students with a wide array of interests. This encourages me to think about chemistry from many different viewpoints and consider new applications for old general chemistry problems.
In addition to my lecture and laboratory duties, I plan to introduce more inquiry-based experiments and active learning opportunities into the general chemistry laboratories. This task requires the development of a new way to train graduate teaching assistants, teaching them to act more as moderators than lecturers and to transition the laboratory from TA-led to student-led experimental design. This will require students to think critically and come up with solutions to open-ended problems, a skill that is necessary for any career they may pursue.
