Logic, broadly conceived, is the abstract study of correct inference, and reaches back historically as far as Aristotle. The history of logic studies the development of logical ideas from Aristotle to the present, elaborating the evolution of our general understanding of inference and related notions (e.g., truth, validity) and the nature and significance of more detailed technical matters. The philosophy of logic is closely connected to its history, attempting to sharpen our understanding of issues arising from philosophical reflection on inference and related notions.
