If You See a Fire in the Building:
- Alert other nearby laboratory and office personnel of immediate danger.
- Alert remainder of building and Fire Department by pulling the nearest fire alarm.
- Assist any injured personnel to safety.
- Go to a safe location and call or specify a co-worker to Dial 9-911
- Give location of fire: Chemistry Building - Building Number: 484
Specify the Wing, if known:
Old Chemistry - '28 Wing
Old Chemistry - '32 Wing
Middle Wing - '59 Wing
Chemistry Annex - '72 Wing
New Chemistry - '86 Wing
and room number. - Give the extent of the fire - how many rooms are involved?
- Are people trapped in their work areas?
- Are there known injuries?
- Give any details that may be important to Emergency Rescue Team what- chemicals or hazards may be involved, is radiation a factor, etc.
- Give location of fire: Chemistry Building - Building Number: 484
- Next, call the Chemistry Business Office at 5-3335 and report the location of the fire.
You may fight the fire yourself if and only if:
- You have been trained in the use of fire extinguishers,
- the fire is small and confined to a specific area (such as a fume hood),
- you are reasonably certain that the fumes that are generated are not toxic and
- you have a clear means of escape if the fire proves to be out of your control.
