The Anant M. Kshirsagar Endowed Fellowship in Statistics was established in 2010 to provide one or more fellowships to full-time students in good standing and pursuing a degree in statistics.
Anant Kshirsagar is a former faculty member of the Statistics Department and has been a long-time friend of the department since his departure. He is currently an Emeritus Professor of Biostatistics at the University of Michigan. He received his MS in statistics from Bombay University (India) in 1951 and his Ph.D from the University of Manchester (England) in 1961. He was an Associate Professor of Statistics at the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas (1968-1971). He then became a Professor of Statistics in the Statistics Department at Texas A&M University from 1971 to 1977. He was a Visiting Professor in our department numerous times from 1980 to 2002. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and a Member of the International Statistical Institute.
Ersen Arseven ‘74 and Luisa L. Sia ‘74 are both recognized in appreciation of their gifts to this fellowship. Kshirsagar was the Chair of Luisa Sia’s Ph.D committee and described her as one of his “brightest and best Ph.D students.” Ersen Arseven took several courses from Dr. Kshirsagar and was inspired by him to pursue a career in statistics. Dr. Kshirsagar was deeply touched when notified about the award made in his honor.
