Research Interests

My academic interests include the military and social history of the United States through 1900.  My research focuses on refugees during the American Civil War–how they survived, experienced, and influenced the conflict.  My master’s thesis–“A Matter of Increasing Perplexity”–examined how refugees in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia played an important role in the famous military operations in that region and how these refugees’ tribulations reflect the struggles of individuals who often did not fit neatly into pro-Union or pro-Confederate designations.
