The International Experience is required for students majoring in International Studies and for students majoring Modern Languages – German. If you are an INTS major, you may go abroad any semester after you have completed INTS 201 and through 202 of your language. German majors may go abroad any semester after they have completed GERM 202. We recommend students begin planning for their International Experience at least a year in advance.

Requirements for INTS Majors

The international experience must be a minimum of 10 weeks long and have an emphasis on language immersion. Students must have completed through 202 of their language courses before being approved to complete their International Experience.

Students must also complete INTS 201 prior to their IE and complete INTS 481 after returning from their IE.

Requirements for German Majors

The international experience must be a minimum of 10 weeks long and have an emphasis on language immersion. Students must have completed through 202 of their German language courses before being approved to complete their International Experience.

Exceptions

Some exceptions were made due to the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. These exceptions were restricted to students graduating Spring 2020-Fall 2021 who were unable to travel internationally due to travel restrictions.

No additional exceptions are made for the International Experience requirement. This is a requirement of the International Studies and Modern Languages - German degrees.

Area Studies

Area studies is typically reserved for courses completed as part of the students International Experience (IE). If you need additional courses to fill your Area Studies requirement at TAMU, we distribute a list every semester that lists courses which will count for each geographic area.

Please meet with an advisor before taking a course to count toward Area Studies. If you have met with an advisor and cleared the course for this area and it says that your course doesn't count toward your Area Studies requirement, it is likely the course simply has not been adjusted yet in Howdy.
