Biography

Tom Burton is an educator who brings his journalism career experience into the classroom. As an award-winning visual journalist and editor for more than 30 years, he covered assignments ranging from presidential elections to Super Bowls to international conflict and disaster zones. Burton also worked during an era of dramatic changes in not only the news industry but in American culture and media technology. Through this era, he was a newsroom innovator who explored and applied new approaches to journalism. As an educator, Burton is a natural storyteller who engages students from the first day of class, encouraging them to be actively curious and to think critically about the impact of media. In his classes, experiential learning is married with strong emphasis on theory, ethics and best practices. His goal is for students to not only learn, but to build their careers with both knowledge and professional-level portfolios. This generation of students will be building a new era of media and Burton helps them gain the confidence to be both highly independent in their work while actively seeking collaboration.
