The Department of Communication and Journalism at Texas A&M University embraces interdisciplinarity, built on the premise that robust multidisciplinary foundations enhance scholarly endeavors. Our educational and research missions span traditional disciplinary boundaries, while at the same time maintaining respect for the unique methodologies and epistemologies of distinct disciplinary traditions. Reflecting this commitment, the department recently restructured into three primary divisions, each with a strong disciplinary focus.

Our Humanities & Critical/Cultural Studies division delves into the intricate relationship between democracy, media, culture, and society. Faculty utilize diverse theoretical frameworks and methodological approaches from the humanities and social sciences to deepen understanding of topics such as democratic engagement, communication ethics, and media literacy. This division actively addresses power dynamics and social injustices, fostering a deep understanding of both historical and contemporary discourses. Our faculty mentor students through immersive research projects, study abroad opportunities, and community engagement, preparing students to be reflective communicators and leaders.

The Communication & Media Science division is dedicated to the empirical study of media effects and communication processes using qualitative, quantitative, and computational methods. Faculty expertise includes political, organizational, health, and strategic communication, with research attention aimed at enhancing our understanding of media's impact on society and developing practical interventions to tackle contemporary social problems.

In the Journalism & Media Practices division, we examine the evolving landscape of news production and dissemination across diverse media platforms. Our curriculum is designed to foster a thorough understanding of both new and traditional media and sharpen students' professional journalism skills, anchored in ethical practices and standards. A critical feature of this division is the Creative Media Lab, which enhances students’ skills in digital media production and design. Division specializations in multimedia journalism and media arts equip graduates to make positive societal contributions as they adeptly navigate and harness the rapidly evolving media landscape.

Through these three divisions, our department offers a broad range of undergraduate and graduate degrees, certificates, and concentrations. These are designed to gain specialization specific disciplines while fostering broader perspectives through interdisciplinary exposure.
