Dr. Satya Sundar Sethy, senior associate professor in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in Chennai, India, will visit the Texas A&M University campus on Thursday, March 30, to present the Fulbright Outreach Lecture, sponsored by the Department of Philosophy and Humanities.
Sethy's lecture, "The Three Phases of Engineering Ethics Development in India," is set for 1 p.m. in Room 112 of the Innovative Learning Classroom Building. Targeted toward undergraduate students and engineering majors in particular, the presentation will focus on what Sethy sees as three distinct phases in the evolution of engineering ethics in India, characterized by a hybrid of Western and Indian ideas: duty ethics (1617-1947), virtue ethics (1948-1990) and professionalism (1991-present).
Sethy currently is a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence pursuing research and teaching tasks at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah. His Fulbright Outreach Lecture is one of a series he has been delivering at institutions across the country, including the University of Mississippi, Utah State, Utah Valley University and San Jose State University. While at Texas A&M, Sethy is being hosted by Dr. Glenn Miller, instructional associate professor of philosophy and humanities.
Sethy previously served as an assistant professor in the Staff Training and Research Institute of Distance Education (STRIDE) at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in New Delhi. In addition to a Fulbright Fellowship, he has received the 2017 Young Philosopher Award, conferred by the Indian Council of Philosophical Research, which is part of India's Ministry of Education. His current research interests include academic ethics, engineering ethics, assessment and evaluation in higher education, academic freedom and institutional autonomy, engineering education, consciousness studies, Aristotelian logic and Indian philosophy.
Beyond publishing several papers in prestigious journals, Sethy has contributed chapters to the related edited books. His recent publications include Introduction to Logic and Logical Discourse (2021), Higher Education and Professional Ethics (edited, 2018), Assessment of Learner Performance (with Mishra, S., 2018), Contemporary Ethical Issues in Engineering (edited, 2015) and Indian Philosophy: Orthodox Systems (2010).
