Dr. Benjamin Davis, Assistant Professor of Africana Studies and Hispanic Studies in the Department of Global Languages and Cultures, begins a three-year term as the President of the American Weil Society, an international academic society devoted to the study of the French philosopher and mystic Simone Weil. Davis will chair the 2026 Simone Weil Colloquy, “Roots, Exile & Migration,”at Texas A&M from April 23-25, 2026.
Earlier this year, Davis published his third monograph, Another Humanity: Decolonial Ethics from DuBois to Arendt, in Edinburgh University Press’ Contemporary Continental Ethics series. Drawing on the works of W. E. B. Du Bois, Édouard Glissant, Sylvia Wynter, and Edward Said, Davis traces evolving conceptions of “the human” and “humanity” across diverse philosophical traditions. Davis’ study culminates in a reflection on the post-WWII correspondence between Hannah Arendt and Karl Jaspers, revealing insights that speak to the ethical challenges of our present moment.
In a time marked by global unrest and cultural fragmentation, Davis’ research offers a timely and profound reconsideration of what it means to be human.
