Jalia L. Joseph's research focuses on topics related to race/ethnicity, gender, social movements, and feminisms.

In their dissertation, Jalia L. Joseph investigated how the interactions between gender and racial dynamics within the Black Lives Matter Movement and the Women’s March (spanning the years 2017 to 2021) influence the political and protest engagement of Black individuals who belong to marginalized genders, referred to as Black MaGes. Furthermore, their research examines how the emotions experienced and the collective memory held by Black MaGes contribute to shaping their political involvement. The study aims to understand how feelings and historical recollections influence Black MaGes’ political and social justice protests.

Their research has been published in several academic journals and edited volumes, including Women’s Studies in Communication, Ethnic and Racial Studies, American Behavioral Scientist, Black Feminist Sociology: Perspectives and Praxis, and Sociology of Race and Ethnicity.
