The cover for International Handbook of the Demography of Poverty and Inequality & picture of Dr. Dudley Poston
Dr. Dudley Poston

Congratulations to Dr. Dudley L. Poston Jr. (Professor of Emeritus) on the publication of such a needed handbook, International Handbook of the Demography of Poverty and Inequality (published as volume 13 in the Springer series of International Handbooks of Population).

Along with Dr. Joachim Singelmann (University of Texas at San Antonio), Dr. Poston worked as a co-editor for this volume. This handbook provides a great reference for demographers, social scientists, policy makers and NGOs by giving a comprehensive and comparative review of poverty and inequality in developing and developed countries from demographic, sociological, and political perspectives. It discusses, among others, the basics of poverty and inequality, issues of poverty and inequality among race/ethnic and sexual minority subpopulations, social processes, country and comparative perspectives, child poverty, and anti-poverty policies. It also touches on regional disparities - such as decline in poverty and inequality in China, East Asian and Pacific countries and rise in poverty and inequality in regions of Sub-Saharan Africa.

The book will serve as an essential resource for anyone working to understand or address poverty and inequality worldwide, exploring key topics such as:

  • Global patterns in poverty and inequality
  • Rapid declines in Asia
  • Disparities in Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Life experiences of race, ethnic and sexual minority populations
  • Child poverty
  • Social processes
  • Anti-poverty policies

Many of the 19 chapters are co-authored by former Aggies. Dr. Rogelio Sáenz (former faculty at TAMU, currently at UTSA) co-authored with Christina Quintanilla-Muñoz (UTSA) the chapter on Latino Poverty in the United States. Danny E. Malone Jr. (Ph.D from TAMU Sociology, currently an Assistant Professor of Criminology at Coastal Carolina University) wrote the chapter on African Americans and inequality and poverty in US. The chapter discussing the socioeconomic inequalities in the lesbian and gay male populations is co-authored by two former TAMU graduate students – Ceylan Engin (now Assistant Professor at Bogazici University) and Amanda Baumle (now Professor at University of Houston) alongside with Ladin Toplu (Bogazici University), Wanjun Chen (University of Houston) and Dudley Poston. The chapter on socioeconomic inequalities in the transgender and nonbinary populations is coauthored by two of our former graduate students – Mary Ann Davis and D’Lane Compton (both now at University of New Orleans) together with Dudley Poston. Chapter on poverty in China is co-authored by Demetrea Nicole Farris (former Aggie and currently Professor of sociology at Each Texas A&M University) and Dudley Poston.

Congratulations again, to Dr. Poston and everyone else who contributed to this Handbook, on this wonderful achievement! This will be an essential tool for everyone who needs to understand poverty and inequality both in US and internationally.
