He began as an Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University in 2004, and remained there until his death. His research areas included social psychology, small group processes, and experimental methods. Stuart J. Hysom Social Psychology Laboratory
The Department of Sociology at Texas A&M University housed the Social Psychology Laboratory that was named in honor and memory of Dr. Stuart J. Hysom (the lab operated until 2021). The laboratory consisted of several different rooms that could be configured in a variety of ways. The laboratory was supported with funds from Texas A&M (the Department of Sociology, the College of Liberal Arts, and the Office of University Research) and the National Science Foundation. For years, the lab was led by Dr. Jane Sell.
The work from the Stuart J. Hysom Social Psychology laboratory is published in many articles and books. The Social Psychology Laboratory was involved in organizing the Stanford Sociology Technical Reports and Working Papers, 1961–1993, available in the OAKTrust digital repository at Texas A&M University. In addition, the Laboratory developed this research script to recruit students to get involved in our projects.
