The South Texas Project is an initiative by faculty of the Department of Communication and Journalism to examine the political, economic and cultural shifts in the vibrant South Texas region.
It is an ongoing, multifaceted project to create new and enhanced research opportunities along the US-Mexico border.
The initiative also includes a journalism reporting project that provides students an opportunity to travel to South Texas to produce stories that inform the public about important issues in the border region.
Students and faculty interested in learning more about the South Texas Project can reach out to Prof. Dale Rice. For the student journalism reporting project, you may contact Prof. Mariano Castillo.

Air Contamination in Laredo
In Spring 2025, a small group of Texas A&M students traveled on a reporting trip to Laredo. There, they joined forces with a pair of journalism students from Texas A&M International University. Together, these students gained valuable field experience interviewing sources, including experts, activists and families living near a plant emitting ethylene oxide, a known carcinogen.
The reporting provides the public with an update on the issue of regulations to these emissions, and the successes and rollbacks regarding ethylene oxide. Click to read the stories below:
