The right opportunity often appears when it's least expected, and for many students in Texas A&M University’s Department of Geography, that’s precisely how their journey begins—a chance encounter with a program that ignites a passion and transforms their future.

For Aggie senior Jewel Fanyui, the Geographic Information Science and Technology (GIST) program was a perfect fit. Her journey to GIST was shaped by her upbringing in Cameroon, service in the Army Reserves, and passion for using technology to address global challenges.

The Bachelor of Science in GIST provides rigorous training in physical and human geography, blending modern education with hands-on problem-solving and professional experience. Geospatial technology graduates are in high demand, with the U.S. Department of Labor identifying them as one of the fastest-growing fields in the federal government. With her unique background and drive, Fanyui is preparing to graduate in spring 2025, ready to leverage this rapidly expanding field to tackle global challenges and make a lasting impact.

Growing Up in Cameroon

Fanyui, 22, was born and raised in Cameroon, a country in Central Africa along the western coast, about 7,000 miles from Aggieland. Growing up, she witnessed the difficulties faced by underserved communities, which gave her a global perspective and a powerful sense of empathy.

"I've always been passionate about helping others because I grew up seeing how different life was for those who are perhaps less fortunate," Fanyui said. "It’s not something I can ignore."

These early experiences inspired her desire to make a difference in the world. What she didn’t know then was that her journey would eventually lead her to Texas A&M, where the Department of Geography and the GIST program would help her turn that drive into action.

Finding Purpose in the Army Reserves

In 2022 Fanyui joined the U.S. Army Reserves for what she thought would be a journey of self-discovery. The six-year commitment, ending in 2028, brought unexpected rewards.

“I did not plan to serve. I just wanted to learn more about myself,” she said. “But I gained so much more—perseverance, grit, structure and amazing friendships.”

Her time in the Army has helped her develop habits that translate into academic success. Texas A&M’s geography faculty members like Dr. Charles Lafon and Dr. Oliver Frauenfeld have praised her dedication to her studies despite the demands of military service.

“I became more consistent and disciplined,” Fanyui said. “That’s something the Army taught me—that consistency pays off.”

Discovering GIST at Texas A&M

After starting her college career as a biology major, Fanyui took a break to complete her training with the Army Reserves. Upon returning to Texas A&M, she initially planned to change her major to technology management. However, when she discovered the program was moving to the College of Engineering, she was introduced to GIST as an alternative. She was captivated by how it combines geography and technology to address complex, real-world issues.

“We explored global economics, societal systems and the ways in which one’s background influences their role within society,” Fanyui said. “As a result, what began as my backup plan quickly became my passion.”

Fanyui’s consistency in her studies is key to her success. By attending class regularly and taking advantage of office hours, she has built habits that help her excel. In both her academic work and personal pursuits, she has found a sense of purpose and credits the close-knit community in the Department of Geography for playing a significant role in her achievements.

Outside of the classroom, Fanyui is dedicated to making a difference through her work with the Texas A&M United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Club. Her desire to help others and support those in need motivates her involvement, as she raises awareness about important global issues while connecting her studies with her personal values.

Looking Ahead

With graduation approaching, Fanyui plans to begin her career as a GIS analyst, with an interest in the oil and gas sector, where geospatial expertise is key to optimizing operations and managing resources. She also dreams of starting her own business and developing innovative applications. Armed with a strong foundation from Texas A&M’s geography department and her passion for GIS, Fanyui is ready to make a global impact and inspire others.
